Best Beauty Looks at Cannes 2014

Last week the International Cannes Film Festival was held in the South of France. The Celebrities this year really impressed with both their fashion and beauty (see my post on the Best Dressed at Cannes here). Here are some of my favourite beauty looks from the Festival.

Blake Lively

Not only did Blake impress in the fashion department with her glamorous dress choices, she also chose some great beauty looks as well to go with them. I like how Blake went for some different makeup looks from her traditional makeup with bold black eyeliner and bright pink lips as well as a classic red lipstick and tied up elegant hairstyle in her most glamorous dress.

Cara Delevingne

Although I wasn't a huge fan of the dress Cara wore on the red carpet, I loved her makeup look here. She of course showed off her bold brows as well as going for a deep dark red/purple colour on her lips. I also liked her different hairstyle here.

Jessica Chastain

I liked how Jessica Chastain mixed up her beauty looks as well as her fashion choices. Two of my favourite looks of hers was the bright red lipstick with the bright blue dress and a more classic and subtle makeup with a nude/pink lip with her old Hollywood style dress.

Suki Waterhouse

I really like Suki Waterhouse's understated yet pretty makeup on the red carpet. The makeup and hair went really well with her dress.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria's makeup looked stunning as always. She went for a look that she would traditionally go for with smokey eyes and a classic nude lipstick paired with her long wavy haistyle.

Frieda Pinto

Fried Pinto' makeup also looked fantastic. She went for a subtle and smoky eye look with a bright bold red lipstick. I also really liked her  glamorous loosely curled hairstyle.

Rosie Huntington Whiteley

Rosie's makeup also looked glamorous to match her beautiful silver grey dress. She wore a smoky eye look with slight flush to her cheeks and a pretty nude shade for her lips as well as long flowing hair.

Cheryl Cole

Cheryl's makeup and hair looked spectacular for her red carpet appearance. I love her chic 60's inspired hairstyle and her smokey brown eye colour with a nude lip.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall's look was one of my favourites from the red carpet. I love the dark pink lip colour and subtle brown eyeshadow shade she wore with her gorgeous Chanel dress.

The Best Dressed at the Met Ball 2014

On Monday night some of the most well known celebrities gathered in Manhattan for the annual Met Gala/Ball. The Ball is held to celebrate the annual fashion exhibition at the Met. This year the exhibit celebrates the career of Charles James, a popular designer in the 40s and 50s. Every year the Ball has a theme and this year the theme was White Tie and Decorations, meaning a sort of Debutante style with tuxedos and full skirts, however many strayed away from the theme this year compared to last years Punk theme where celebrities went all out (the theme was quite vague in their defense). But that doesn't mean that there weren't some great looks on the Red Carpet this year. In fact I was pleasantly surprised by most of the celebrities dress choices with only a few ending up on my Worst Dressed list and way too many to choose from for the Best Dressed. Here are my Best Dressed Celebs from the Ball.

Best  Dressed

Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita once again stunned on the Red Carpet, as she has done all year. Although this Prada dress didn't really fit with the theme it was still amazing and Lupita pulled it off really well. I love the bold emerald green colour matched with subtle makeup.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez also looked incredible at the Met Ball in this Diane Von Furstenberg gown. I think the dress matched the event well and looked sophisticated yet still young for Selena with some ruffled detailing on the neckline. I also really love this colour on her matched with her bold lipstick, sleek up-do and gorgeous Lorraince Schwartz earrings.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

I also really loved Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's look on the Red Carpet. Although this once again didn't really fit in with the theme, this Balmain dress looked great on Rosie and the pattern and style was unique and daring but in a good way. Her shoes also matched so well with the dress and her natural hair and makeup look.

Kendall Jenner

One of the youngest stars on the Red Carpet was also one of the Best Dressed from the night, Kendall Jenner. She stunned in this gorgeous champagne coloured mermaid tail Topshop dress with matching accessories and a gorgeous up-do to match. Obviously the aspiring high fashion model is learning from her recent career success and showing everyone how it's done.

Beyonce and Jay-Z

The night was also the event for high profile couples to attend this year. Jay Z and Beyonce both looked amazing in matching Givenchy. I loved how unique and sophisticated Beyonce's dress was with a sheer, peplum and a plunging neckline without any of it being too revealing. I also loved the dramatic makeup look with a dark vampy red lip and veil and gorgeous Lorraine Schwartz earrings. Jay Z also looked suave and sophisticated as per usual. The two have recently announced a tour together in North America showing no signs of slowing down after their separate tours. The two seem closer than ever and at one point Beyonce lost her ring and Jay Z found it and jokingly bended down on one knee fake proposed to her on the Red Carpet!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim and Kanye were also one of the high profile couples attending the Met Ball this year and they both impressed, unlike Kim's fashion fail last year. However we are glad she was invited back because this year she has ended up on the Best Dressed list in her Lanvin gown. Her recent Vogue cover with Kanye and contact with Anna Wintour must have influenced Kim and this dress looks gorgeous on her. I love the colour and the slit down the dress paired with her hair pulled to one side. Even Kanye seemed to actually enjoy himself in his dapper Lanvin suit, shown through Kim's Instagram pictures that she shared of the couple with various celebrities throughout the night.

Rihanna

Rihanna also looked amazing this year on the Red Carpet in a Stella McCartney top and matching skirt. I think Rihanna pulled off the white dress look the best out of all other contenders due to her risk with showing her stomach in a crop top but still managing to make the whole outfit look elegant with the detailing at the collar matched with her gorgeous curly hair tied up yet cascading down and the ruched detailing of her flowing skirt.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake and Ryan were also one of the power couples that made a rare appearance together at the Ball this year. Blake Lively was definitely one of my Best Dressed of the night in this gorgeous Gucci number and Ryan didn't look too bad either! I'm happy to see Blake showcasing her fashion taste in public again after having a break from acting since the end of Gossip Girl and marrying Mr Reynolds. She certainly proved she's still got it and her hair and makeup looked incredible as always.

Worst Dressed

Rita Ora

What was Rita Ora thinking when she paired this dress with those god awful shoes and matching bracelet/piece of fabric/bandage? The dress could have actually looked nice with the lacy detailing and slit with the long skirt if she hadn't ruined it with those shoes!

Kate Upton

This dress was just completely wrong. Kate looked more like a flamenco dancer than a sophisticated Debutante. The striped see-through parts of the dress are quite strange, as well as the weirdly shaped skirt and the distracting and unsophisticated headpiece rounding this whole look off as just bad. This is really disappointing as Kate would have looked amazing in a less risky and beautiful ball gown.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

I'm not sure if I even have words for this disaster that Maggie Gyllenhaal tried to pass off as a dress. The pattern is just terrible and so not right for the Met Ball. Also the weird colours and pattern make the Valentino dress seem so unflattering. It just looks like Joseph's technicolour dreamcoat gone horribly wrong. Also her bright and unnatural looking hair looked scruffy for this event.

Katie Holmes

Obviously Katie Holme's split from Tom Cruise and her fashion label, Holmes and Yang, haven't helped her fashion sense recently. This dress is just too big, bright and in your face. It looks like Katie has tried to copy Belle from Sleeping Beauty however I think the look ages her and I don't like the extreme detailing and ruffling at the top. Also the strange pattern in the middle looks like she has spilled food down her dress.

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana definitely disappoints in whatever this monstrosity is, designed by Michael Kors who is pictured with her. From her head to her waist she looks beautiful however the double tiered puffy skirts with a dated and unflattering pattern on completely destroy this look and place her on the Worst Dressed list. It actually looks like shes trying to hide someone/disguise something underneath those skirts.

Shailiene Woodley

Here is an example of a young star who has done the opposite of Kendall Jenner and got her look completely wrong. The Rodarte dress has way too much going on with a block of grey, embellishment and sheer floral sections. The dress isn't right for the Met Ball, or Shailene, and she could have looked so much better which is so disappointing.

Overall, I loved what most of the celebrities chose for their outfits for this years Met Ball. I think my favourites would have to be Blake Lively, Beyonce, Kendall and Selena. Who do you think was the Best Dressed at the Met Ball 2014?

Audrey Hepburn's 85th Birthday

Today (4th May) would have been the iconic Audrey Hepburn's 85th Birthday. As she is one of mine and Jess' favourite actresses and all time icons, I thought I would do a post on everything we love about Audrey!

1. Breakfast at Tiffany's

What's not to love about this great classic film? It is both mine and Jess' all time favourite film. Firstly because Audrey is so chic and talented in the film and she brings the character of Holly Golightly to life! Although Truman Capote, the author of the novella that that the film was based on, originally wanted Marilyn Monroe to play the lead in the film, we're so glad they eventually chose Audrey. Who else could have pulled off the stylish little black dress better than her? Also we've never seen eating a danish (which Audrey hated) done so gracefully with such stylish pearls, gloves and huge sunglasses. Another added bonus is the beautiful Jewellery shown at Tiffany's and the fact that the film is set in our favourite city of New York. Also the final scene in the alleyway in the rain with Paul and Holly is one of the greatest film endings and love stories. And of course the film would be nothing without her sidekick Cat!

2. Her Style

Audrey Hepburn is known for her amazing style. Think little black dresses, sunglasses and beige trench coats in Breakfast at Tiffany's and cigarette pants and black jumpers in Funny Face, as well as cute sundresses and gorgeous ball gowns worn in many of her other films. Audrey is the epitome of classic and sophisticated style both in her films and everyday life. No wonder she is a fashion icon for so many.

3. Her Beauty

I love Audrey's simple yet sophisticated beauty look. Her signature strong arched brows are definitely making a comeback recently and her cat-eye eyeliner to enhance her long eyelashes is a classic that we all still try and copy today. Add a pink nude lipstick and a neutral eye shadow and you have Audrey's gorgeous every day and easily wearable look. She also had some unforgettable hairstyles throughout her career from a short bob to her famous beehive in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

4. Her Wise Words

Audrey wasn't only beautiful and talented, she was also wise. She always came out with great phrases and inspirational quotes. Some of my favourites include "The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.", "I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and... I believe in miracles.", "I've been lucky. Opportunities don't often come along. So, when they do, you have to grab them.", "There are certain shades of limelight that can wreck a girl's complexion.", and of course "Paris is always a good idea".

5. Her Charitable Nature

Audrey was also known for her kind spirit and charitable nature. She dedicated a lot of her time to helping those in need, especially working as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Charity Unicef. She spent some of the last years of her life working with disadvantaged children in African, Asian and South American communities.

6. Her Acting

Audrey certainly had an incredible acting range and no matter what her role was she always seemed to pull it off with class and sophistication. Of course our favourite role was Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffanys in which she managed to play troubled yet chic so well. Another great role was Jo in Funny Face which she acted with such sweetness and innocence. And who could forget one of her first major roles as the fun loving Princess Ann in Roman Holiday (riding on a Vespa through Rome is definitely one for the bucket list). She's also played a nun in The Nun's Story, a screenwriter/spy in Paris When It Sizzles, an awkward dreamer in Sabrina transformed into an elegant woman, a working class Cockney Flower Girl turned into a High Society lady and many more. Her films are timeless classics that will still be watched in years to come.

7. Her Singing

I think Audrey didn't get enough credit for her singing capabilities. Her voice was dubbed over in My Fair Lady, replaced by Julie Andrews, but she wasn't that bad of a singer. Who can forget her sincere and honest performance of Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffany's on the balcony of Holly's apartment. Also she managed to sing well in the film Funny Face. Although it wasn't the greatest singing in the world she was still talented and brought a quirkiness and character to her singing roles. Her version of Moon River will always be my favourite.

Audrey will always be an icon for us due to her classic and timeless style, her fantastic acting and her great personality.
Happy 85th Birthday Audrey!
